Fighting An Uphill Battle: Report On The Consultations Into The Well-Being Of Black Youth In Peel Region

"This report addresses the lack of opportunity for black racialized youth, as well as other racialized youth in Peel region, and examines their experiences with identity issues, policies, the economy and racism.I chose this piece because it details “crimes of opportunity” that young racial minorities experience, how they play out in Peel Region, and what in particular needs to be addressed and solved. One suggestion is to increase the number of racialized teachers. I think this is significant because it is important to have a teacher who can relate to your experience.

This section of the Justice for Children and Youth website addresses these questions:

  • If I'm over 16 and can't live at home, do my parents have to support me?
  • Can I get Ontario Works ("OW", "welfare" or "social assistance") to live on my own?
  • What does Ontario Works pay for?
  • How do I apply for Ontario Works?
  • Do I have a right to apply for OW?

"Katelynn's Principle" has far-reaching potential for transformational change

"Katelynn's Principle" would place children at the centre of the child welfare and youth justice system

The jury at Katelynn Sampson's inquest has delivered their verdict and made 173 recommendations that potentially strengthen the way in which we offer protection to all children in this province.

The Office of the Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth will strive to ensure that parties who have recommendations before them consider them carefully.
